What is a Pine Bark Beetle?

The Pine Bark Beetle is a small insect that is known for its brutal attacks on pine trees in massive groups. They are attracted to trees that are experiencing high amounts of stress due to drought, flooding, neglect etc.. The Pine Bark Beetle is approximately the size of a grain of rice and bores a small hole through the bark and into the vascular layers of the pine tree. These layers allow the flow of nutrients from the roots to the canopy of the tree (like our veins and arteries). Although small, the Pine Bark Beetle attacks the tree in large numbers so that the number of bore holes in the pine tree can reach up to the thousands. Ultimately, the vascular layer of the tree is disrupted to the point that essential nutrients are no longer able to reach the trees foliage and the tree dies. This can take as little as 14 days from the time the Pine Bark Beetle enters the tree. By the time you notice the infestation it may have already been 10 days or more.
What has killed my pine trees?

How Do Houston Heights Arborist Manage These Pests?

A small plug called an ArborPlug is directly inserted into a drill hole around the base of the tree. A specialized needle is then inserted into the Arborplug and formula is injected into the vascular system of the tree. The formula is then dispersed throughout the trunk, branches and leaf tissue. The ArborPlug keeps the injected formula inside the tree, protects the drill hole, and remains inside the tree without causing any adverse effects. The tree begins to fight off the infestation from the inside-out and in time grows right over the plug.

Pine Bark Beetles will generally attack the closest surrounding pine tree after they are finished with the original tree. It is important to talk with your Arborist about preforming this procedure on the neighboring trees to decrease the chance of an infestation spreading to the rest of your yard and/or your neighborhood.
How to get rid of pine bark beetles in Houston

Why is This Method Beneficial?

After the procedure, there are no chemicals that are left in the yard or air so it is safe for your children and your pets. The treatment is highly effective and supported by proven university trials along with all of our clients who chose Houston Heights Arborist to help with their Pine Bark Beetle infestation. The product used will last for 2 years and its long lasting effects will ensure the safety of your trees from unwanted pests for the following years.

What Method Does NOT Work?

Spraying the Trees: Spraying a tree is only effective for pests that actually come in contact with the insecticide. Pine Bark Beetles are embedded beneath the bark of the tree, so spraying would not be very helpful. Spraying will also kill desirable insects such as butterflies, honey bees, lady bugs and others. Spraying insecticides in not legal near waterways and is toxic to native fish. It can also be extremely messy and will wash off during periods of rain.

What Does it Cost?

Application cost is based on the amount of product used, trunk diameter, and labor for application. Contact Houston Heights Arborist today to schedule your consultation by calling 281-786-0766  or you can fill out our online contact form.

How To Stay Vigilant

We advise homeowners to consider preventative measures by
identifying the causes for a Pine Bark Beetle attack.
Prevention is key when it comes to Pine Bark beetles. There are a few precautionary measures that you can take to prevent beetle entry and infestation and we want to share them with you!

  • Act diligently before the active season for Pine Bark beetles begins! Peak season for beetle activity is from March to October, however, they can remain active throughout winter.
  • Homeowners that have pine trees need to keep a close eye out for browning needles or needles turning a rusty red color.
  • When a tree becomes stressed, it will produce a higher quantity of Pine cones. This is a symptom that you must not overlook!
  • If a fine granular or fuzzy like sawdust appears at the base of your tree, you MUST call us immediately!
  • Watch for pitch tubes to appear. They resemble small crawfish mounds and protrude from the trunk of your tree. Once pitch tubes are present, it may be too late to save your tree at this point, but we can help with what may be a hazardous removal.  (See picture provided as an example of a pitch tube)
